West Coast Junior Chess (Vancouver, BC)

Chess is simply a brilliant game where an inventive spirit often overcomes pure matter, where the weakest piece may, in the end, become the strongest figure. This is a fantasy-world, but it is also a reflection of the real world. (Arthur Yussopov, Chess GrandMaster)

The Goal Is Simple - Checkmate The Other Guy

Anyone can play chess. Few can play it well. The aim is simple: Put your opponent's king in check - under attack - in a spot where it can't escape. Checkmate.

At the highest levels, the game calls for enormous powers of memory and calculation. No luck is involved. Talented players can look at a 64-square board crammed with a couple of dozen black and white pieces that move in different ways and can visualize how things might look perfectly in few moves.

l’enfance. Voilà pourquoi je suis particulièrement
heureux des parties où mes étudiants
surpassent leurs adversaires justement dans
cet aspect du jeu.

To be good in chess, you need a good memory/ Une bonne mémoire est importante

The Chess Instructor

(Jan Van De Mortel from the book , The Chess Instructor, 2009 )

Chess in the Classroom

In an ideal world, chess would be a standard part of our national curriculum, recognized by the educational establishment as the powerful instructional tool that it is. But most schools administrators view the game as essentially irrelevant, and this generalized belief makes it hard for prospective chess teachers and organizations to get both funding and access to valuable in-school instructional time.
